Past Projects

Marin Transit is currently studying our fare collection system and seeking input from riders. Next year, big upgrades are coming to the Clipper system that will improve the experience for those who use Clipper to pay their fare. Also, the cash boxes we currently use to collect cash and process passes are going out of production. Marin Transit is considering what technology should replace these fare boxes to continue to allow passengers to pay with cash.

Marin Transit purchased 2.5 acres of property at 600 Rush Landing Rd in Novato in 2020 with the intent to use the space for bus parking. The footprint is narrow and constrained on either side by US Hwy 101 to the west and SMART tracks to the east. Buses parked there include Marin Transit’s Rural and Muir Woods Shuttle Fleet, as well as four battery Electric Buses.

While the site was adequate for use as is, Marin Transit planned projects to add electric bus charging to the site, and to replace the fence and improve lighting.

Marin Transit has installed 18 solar powered Real Time information signs at bus stops in Marin County! Funded with a Federal Lifeline Grant, the signs can be found at bus stops in Marin City, Novato, the Northgate Mall in the Terra Linda neighborhood of San Rafael, and the Canal neighborhood in San Rafael.

As part of the 2020 Short Range Transit Plan update, the District has performed a comprehensive evaluation of fare policies and eligibility standards for Marin Access programs. In September 2019, a draft proposal on fares and fare policies was provided to the Marin County Transit District's Board of Directors. Staff released a draft Fare Policy, Program Eligibility, and Low-Income Fare Assistance Proposal for public review and comment to the Board on November 18, 2019.

Project Completed in 2013

The South Novato Bus Stop Improvements construction project will improve bus patron access and transfers in Novato by upgrading two transit stop locations. Construction is anticipated in September or October 2013. Improvements include construction of bus pads, curb ramps, improved crosswalks, and minor signal modifications in the following two areas:

Marin Transit has received it's first two Zero Emission Battery Electric Buses in September 2018! 

The buses, which can seat 32 passengers, will charge overnight and be operated on Marin Transit local routes by Golden Gate Transit (GGT).  Charging infrastructure has been installed already.  The advertised range of the buses are 145 miles per charge, but things like heat and hills reduce the range.  The buses will first operate no more than 80 miles per day as both Transit agencies learn more about the buses' capabilities.

This project was completed in 2019. 

The purpose of this project is to improve accessibility, safety, and amenities of local bus stops in Marin County. 

The first phase of the project included an upgrade of all Marin Transit signage at bus stops to include bus route numbers, destination, and operation information for local routes.  Each sign has a Stop ID number so that customers can call 511 to obtain schedule information.  The second phase of the project was improvements to 12 stops throughout Marin County.
